Client Brief Requirements
As an engineer I have been the opportunity to make a new product in order to make the process of using a vice on a black and decker workmate a lot easier and more flexible. The customer requirements states "You must design and make an attachment device to be used in conjunction with a Black and Decker Workmate and the RGTS Vice. The attachment must allow the vice to be securely attached to the workmate, as well as allowing one full movement; either 360 degree rotation OR 180 degree tilt, and be locked in any desired location." Furthermore to go into more detail the customer has asked for the new device to be manufactured to allow "one full movement" which means that it will rotate at either a 360 degree rotation or a 180 degree tilt. Lastly the customer has asked for the new component to allow the vice to lock into its requested position by the operator. When designing my device I would need to apply the requests of the customer and add additional that will play a part in the development of the component in order to improve its quality and sustainability.

In this product analyisis I will be applying the ACCESSFM technique to critique the design of the products that are being used in this project. This involves the following products such as the Black and Decker workmate and the RGTS Vice. This is due to the fact that that these are the main products that are to be redesigned to meet the requirements of the client.
Black and Decker:
Aesthetics: The aesthetics of the Black and Decker workmate is very simple and slick with a very basic colours such as the light shade of wood has a good combination with the black frame. Furthermore the workmate has the branded logo that states "Black and Decker, the original workmate 356". This gives a bold and clear indication to the customer
Cost: The Black and Decker workmate normally retails at about £30-£44 which in the construction and building industry is considered as relatively cheap.This means that it will gain a lot of popularity and attraction from its customers and will sell out very quickly.
Customer: Judging by the reviews the customer seems to be very delighted with the quality of the product and how efficient the product is for everyday DIY as it is at a good height and is sturdy. This means that when the workmate is being used it will provide full stability when being used in full operation. However an underlying issue with the product is that the instructions were not very clear and that when it came to assembling the product it was huge struggle. Other than that there were no further issues with the product as it was very easy to manage when assembled and thus has additional features such as being able to fold up and hung up on different.
Environment: From what we know of the product and when it is being used, we know that the product is fairly small and does not take up a lot of space in a workshop. Furthermore an additional feature is that it also can fold up and can be hung up so that it can used again for a different project.
Size: We know that the product i.e. the Black and Decker workmate is at a good height and is reasonably small. In addition to this is big enough to carry specific procedures when working in construction environment.
Safety: The workmate is extremely safe and cannot cause any harm to any potential customers or operators as it does not have any sharp edges, which means that the operators will not be cut and will be able to carry out projects without being injured or hurt.
Function: When being used in the workshop it was known to be easy to manage and mobile which is great for everyday DIY. It can carry out projects when being used vert easily as it is very stable.
Material: The materials that are applied to this component are mainly wood and metal. These materials tend to be able to last a long time and can seen as very durable to the operator.
