In this lesson I will applying the ACCESS FM to critique the design of RGTS Vice, carry out further research on vices whilst keeping a record of the vices and there features that I could potentially apply to my final project so that I meet the product requirements. Lastly I will need to do some more in depth research on products that will allow for tilting, rotating and be locked in any required position so that it be mobile on the Black and Decker workmate. In addition to this I will also be doing further research on devices that allow for tilting and rotating.

RGTS Vice


Aesthetics: The appearance of the vice is very basic but yet appealing to the customer eye. Furthermore due to its curved edges it has a slick and smart design to it that will gain the attention of the customer despite the fact that it has a dull colour. One improvement that could be is to change the colour choice.
Cost: The cost of the vice is relatively cheap as it retails at £30. For the basic requirement that is a good price for this product and to most eyes would be seen as a bargain. This will gain a lot of attraction and will potentially sell out fairly quickly if it stays at this reasonable price.
Customer: The customer will gain an automatic attraction to the product due to its simple and basic design. It also meets the requirements of a basic vice.
Environment: One thing that is extremely irritating about workshop equipment is the fact that they can tend to take up a lot of space and make it difficult for the operator to carry out further operations. That is not the case with the RGTS Vice as is small and minimal and does not take up a lot of space which is important for carrying out other activities in the workshop.
Size: As described before the product is small and minimal and does not take up a lot of space. This is a great feature to have on a device like this as it will allow the operator to have more space on the workspace if he would like to carry out more techniques and operations when in the workshop.
Safety: Regarding the safety of the product, the device is easy to use and is completely safe with no risk of cuts or bruising. This is due to the fact that the product has no sharp edges due to the fact that a majority of them are curved edges.
Function: The functionality of the vice is very easy as it can attach to any worktop due to its adjustable lock that will allow flexibility when wanting to attach to the vice to different worktops depending on its thickness.
Material: The material is a type of plastic and a bit of metal most likely aluminium. These materials will tend to last a long time and will provide a high quality vice the operator or customer.

This vice allows for tilting and can be adjusted rotating and can easily be attached to any part of the table without taking up much space on the worktop. In addition to this the component has an additional screw that allows the clamp vice to attach to the table securely so that no movement can occur when the operator is carrying out any projects in the workshop. One thing that I would take from this device is the fact that it has a fastener that allows for strong, safe security onto the worktop. The tilting feature would be great but it would too difficult to manufacture.

This vice is thick and sturdy, it is mostly used for milling machines but can also be used as a table vice when carrying out projects within a workshop. However there is one minor flaw with the vice and that being that when the vice is secured and it holds components when they need to be worked on in the jaws of the vice. Although this feature helps a lot with in the workshop the teeth can damage the component being worked on by leaving marks and imprints that would affect the outlook of the component being manufactured. 










This is a basic vice that is mostly used in small manufacturing processes, it is very minimal and does not take up a lot of space on the worktop which means that when the operator wants to carry out other procedures it will affect the processes that would need to carried out. From this device I would use the fact that it is small and easily mobile. This is a good advantage to have as it will make batch production consistently quick which means that the device will be manufactured at a fast rate with a large amount.

With this device I like the idea that it is in the shape of a c, this is perfect for fitting edges of tables so that other processes can be carried out on the worktop. From this device a feature I would take is the unique shape that it has, it has a c shape that is different to most clamps but for the product requirements of the product that I need to manufacture I will not be able to use this as it will not ensure mobility across the workmate due to the fact that it can only be locked onto edges of worktops. 















As part of the engineering problem we have to address the fact that the mechanisms allow for tilting and rotating whilst giving an analysis of each component and the features that can extracted from them and applied to my final device.I will mainly focus on the device being able to rotate at 180-360 or being able to tilt whilst being able to be locked onto any position on the worktop. When addressing the criteria I will also need to keep in mind the assessing technique known as ACCESSFM.

This component allows for tilting, this is a great feature to have as it addresses the product requirement of being able to tilt at a certain angle. However it does not reach all the product requirements as it has the feature of tilting but not of being able to rotate at at 180-360 degree angle. This does target one of the main requirements which means that the mechanism that is used in this device can be implemented in my final design in my project.

In this device the idea of rotating is good but unfortunately this rotating mechanism will be hard manufacture. The main target of this project is to easily be able to manufacture the mechanism device and produce it at a high mass. I will have to conclude that I will not be using this method as it will be very hard to manufacture and attach onto the worktop.








In this component you can clearly see the component addresses the product requirement of being able to tilt backwards and forwards. This type of device would be eligible for my project but to ensure that it can attach to the worktop I would need to configure a way that the component will be able to attach to the worktop and be secured into place whilst being able to be located in any position on the worktop.








In this mechanism you can see that it can safely and securely attach to the worktop and attach a component to it. I would have to ensure that the component is full rotational and can also hold the vice at the same time. One thing that I like in particular about this device is that it does not take up a lot of space on the worktop which means that there will be a lot mobility and free space to carry out other procedures in the workshop. This is definitely a component that I would like to consider using and I would definitely apply it to my final project.
